RESCUED IN 2021 ADOPTED IN 2022

We are so excited that you’ve chosen Safe Haven Equine Warriors to help you start your journey into horse ownership! The biggest advantage of adoption versus private sale is that our goal is to place the right human with the right horse, and not to maximize the sale price or push an unfit horse on an unsuspecting new owner. Whether you are looking for a companion animal or your next show champion, adoption is the option! We consider every human and horse that comes through one of our programs to be family, and as such all have a place at Safe Haven. We provide a soft landing for any equine alum who’s owner’s life circumstances have changed, and our adopters may reach out at any time for help or with questions.

You are always family here!

  • COMPLETE OUR SHORT ADOPTION/FOSTER SURVEY

This short survey tells us which horse(s) you are interested in, and familiarizes us with your experience to further help us place you with the right horse for your goals.

If you are UNDER 18 years old please have a parent or guardian complete the form.

SHEW works with every adopter to find the perfect match.

  • These are guidelines, we work with every adopter on a case by case basis.

All adopters must be over the age of 18

Horses are herd animals, and as such need the consistent presence of another of their kind for their mental and emotional wellbeing. There must be at least one other horse present as a friend for any horse adopted from SHEW.

Suitable and accessible shelter must always be present for the horse’s use.

Accessible water must be present, 24/7, in winter-appropriate tubs or troughs.

Appropriate, safe fencing. Check out our approved types HERE.

These are all parts of the Maryland Horse Council’s Minimum Standard of Care of Equines.

  • Following three adoption appointments to meet the horse(s) you are interested in, if both horse and adopter are working well, and you want to move forward with the adoption, you will need to complete an Adoption Application Form. (downloadable version)

Click HERE for an online version, complete online and submit. Easy!

Along with the application form we require a non-refundable $25 application fee . You can pay this fee online HERE

  • SHEW will work with each adopter on a case by case basis

Each adopter is required to complete a FACILITY PROFILE REPORT within 14 days of submitting the application to ensure the facility meets the Maryland Horse Council’s Minimum Standard of Care for Equines. This can be as simple as submitting a few photos or a site visit when we deliver the horse on adoption day.

When your adoption application is complete, SHEW will work with you to arrange a pick-up or delivery schedule that works for you.

We can arrange transport for your horse. There is no fee, but we always appreciate any donations!!!

  • All our horses leave for their new forever homes with up-to-date vaccinations, coggins, farrier, vet and dental care up to date. We will give you some feed and any supplements to get you through the new home transition.

We also microchip all our horses and register the horse with petlink.com. This information will be given to you along with any nutrition or medical needs in your adoption packet.

  • We work very closely with all our potential foster homes, with regards to fees, and/or any medications needed by our foster horses- this will vary case by case.

  • All adopted horses are deeded after one year of adoption, following a satisfactory health check and clarification of an up-to-date veterinary care.
